Abstract
Background: There were many vocabularies denoting drowning in ancient Egypt. However, few studies addressed the drowning and its types in ancient Egypt. Aim: The aim of this study is shed a light on the types of drowning in ancient Egypt and its implication. Results: Drowning was known to the ancient Egyptian in several types, including punishment for the guilty, as a reward for what they did of good deeds. The first type of drowning is considered intentional and was clearly depicted in many scenes, whether in the other world. The second type of drowning is performed in a lake which was specially prepared for drowning guilty ones, or in the life of this world. For drowning, the crocodile was devouring one of the sinners to drown him or devour him as a punishment. The third type of drowning was unintentional, such as the accidental drowning of a person in the Nile by mistake. Conclusion: in contrast to drowning in the contemporary ages where it is mostly unintentional, drowning in ancient Egypt was used for punishment of guilty and as a reward. The study opens new avenue for more detailed studies to record the implication of drowning in the different life aspects of ancient Egypt.
